Steward Health Care Under Investigation
Steward Health Care, a company managing hospitals in the U.S. and Malta, is facing financial and legal troubles. In Malta, where it operates a handful of public hospitals under contract, there are investigations into possible fraud and corruption at the hospitals. The U.S. Department of Justice is also investigating Steward for potential violations of laws against corruption abroad. Steward recently filed for bankruptcy in the United States and is trying to sell its hospitals in various states. Reports are that initial bids have not been promising. Despite these challenges, Steward and its executives have not been charged with any crimes related to the investigations. Steward operates the following Hospitals in Florida: Coral Gables Hospital, Hialeah Hospital, North Shore Medical Center, Palmetto General Hospital, Florida Medical Center, Melbourne Regional Medical Center, Rockledge Regional Medical Center, and Sebastian River Medical Center.
