Surgeon and nurse sentenced to prison time following the death of a patient
A plastic surgeon and his nurse were sentenced to prison for their roles in the death of a patient who died following a breast augmentation at their clinic. The incident took place in 2018, when the patient went into cardiac arrest during the procedure. The surgeon was sentenced to three years for voluntary manslaughter and aiding unlicensed medical practice, while the nurse received 2 years for involuntary manslaughter. The prosecutors accused the surgeon and nurse of delaying emergency help for about 3 hours during which the surgeon instructed the staff not to call 911 and lied about the patient’s condition to her husband. Instead, he sought counsel from anesthesiologists, one of whom urged him to call 911 immediately. The patient was hospitalized but died over a month following the procedure.
